Today brought protests and demonstrations here in California after the passage of Proposition 8. The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints is taking quite a hit. I wish the opponents of this proposition could understand that, for members of our church, this is not a matter of bigotry or hostility towards gays and lesbians. We don't object to rights for same-sex couples regarding hospitalization and medical care, fair housing and employment rights, or probate rights. This is and always has been about protecting the sacred and divine institution of marriage - a union between a man and a woman. We have every right, as a church, to get involved in politics when moral issues are involved. This is our constitutional right.

I keep thinking about how those of us who supported Prop. 8 would have responded had it been defeated. I would hope that we would not have behaved as the "No's" are.
